Our thoughts: This one is a compact and lightweight option for those lone riders. You’ll have a little bit of everything with this one. And one thing I gotta tell you, this one is quite durable and probably last a long time.
3. Brooklyn BKC UH-TK181 Tandem kayak
Overview: To those who are looking to go fishing or gliding across the stream with their loved ones, this BKC UH-TK181 tandem kayak could be the best choice. My close pal owns one of these BKC UH-TK181 models, and I gotta be honest, it’s a pretty solid kayak. Like touring bike, the kayak has the ability to operate smoothly for longer fishing sessions.
Design & Dimensions: The construction choice and material quality are top notch. With the size of 12.5 ft, the BKC. UH-TK181 weight is only 68 lbs. The payload capacity of this kayak is up to 440 lbs. Enough to accommodate two adults with ease.
Comfort: Kayak manufacturer came to a long way l, especially the last two decades. Despite being a pretty hefty kayak, this one is surprisingly ergonomic. But come on Brooklyn, use a bit more cushioning brother. Middle-aged men like me have a tendency to develop chronic back pain. Extra cushioning ease up the pain in the long run. Oh, I almost forgot about those footrests. Yeah, they are quite alright.
Storage options: This biggie offers a lot of compartments to fit all your necessities easily. You’ll find 3 adjustable rod holders with another 4 flush mount rod holders. Whooping 7 rod holders. You’ll also find 86 inches lightweight aluminum paddles with twin paddle rests.
And for your water sensitive equipment, you’ll find waterproof storage compartments with eight scupper holes. You know, just in case of emergency water drainage.
Stability & transportation: First of all, this is a big size kayak. So expect a smooth ride even in the rough streams. The hull design is a balanced ergonomic styling, allows the kayak to cut through the wind efficiently. Despite it’s heavier size, you can easily maneuver this kayak with little effort. The tracking ability is also on the mark.
Now, this tandem kayak isn’t ideal for a single person to move around. I mean you’ll literally find 4 carrying handles. Which means, give me a hand Dustin.
Our thoughts: Although the BKC UH-TK181 is an older model, but still staying relevant to the kayak fishing community. In my opinion, this one does everything alright. And since it’s been in the market for a while now, you’ll find some good deals for a budget.
4. Lifetime 10 foot, two-person tandem fishing kayak
Overview: Another excellent tandem kayak that can sail with three people onboard. Introducing the Lifetime 10 foot tandem fishing kayak for those who sail in pairs. Why choose this one? Well, to put things simply, it’s well-built, durable, smooth riding experience and much other stuff come into play. Let’s check them out, shall we?
Design & dimensions: If you’re looking for a compact yet spacious kayak, the lifetime 10 foot tandem kayak is your cup of tea. This kayak can hold two adults and little anglers onboard without any issues.
As you’ve noticed already, this kayak has a length of 10 foot and a width of 35 inches. The hull is made from roto-molded polyethylene which makes it both lightweight & durable.
The paddle is also a good one. Forged from molded polymer and aircraft-grade aluminum, means they are ready for any kind of hard use. The draft is at 6 inches and the paddle is 86.6 inches. Convenient size with the premium build quality.
Comfort: Although this lifetime tandem kayak is in the compact class, the heavier payload capacity allows the kayaker to experience a smoother ride. You can ride this kayak both in calm and rough waters.
I found the adjustable footrests positioning very handy. Both kids and adults are compatible. Molded polyethylene material allows the kayak to slice through water easily. Expect little to no bumpy ride.
The backrests are nice enough to fish for a while.

There are also 3-rod holders available for use. And the ditty trays with shock cord straps protect useful equipment from falling overboard. You can use 2 doubles sided paddles which comes free with the kayak!

Our thoughts: If you love to fish and recreational kayak with friends and family, go for it. You’ll be sacrificing some maneuverability. But, from price to performance point of view, the Lifetime 10 foot tandem fishing kayak is worth every penny.

7. Sun Dolphin Bali 13.5 foot tandem kayak

Design & dimensions: The styling of this kayak is sit-in top tandem. Built like a rocket with an impressive length of 13.5 foot and width of 34.5″. The height is measured at 15″. When I first paddled this kayak, I was surprised by it’s darting speed and sharp maneuverability.
It has an empty weight of 70 lbs with Max capacity at 500 lbs. The building material is polyethylene which is both durable and flexible. And also gets ample sunlight protection from UV inhibitor. Which also helps retain its color for longer.
Comfort: No kayak is perfect until it features a comfortable backrest. The Sun Dolphin Bali didn’t disappoint. The high backrest positioning with comfortable padding lets you paddle for longer.
I also loved the idea of center seat positioning. Comes in pretty handy if you want to go solo once in a while. The self-bailing feature is also very convenient. The higher deck also helps and self-bailing drains out the water before even entering the hull area.
You’ll also find paddle holders and adjustable foot braces very handy. It ensures people with different sizes can climb aboard without hesitation.

For long lasting protection and durability, BKC UH-TK219 used polyethylene material. And you can also stay confident with its UV protection capacity in the summer.
Comfort: What I loved about the BK UH-TK219, is a comfort. They placed footrest for both the kayakers. So whenever you’re fishing or just enjoying a cold soda, the footrest will add extra convenience.
Even if you have long legs, the footrest will provide enough space and comfort. And for easier collision free paddling, this tandem BKC kayak has a wide frame. This will let your legs move freely while paddling through the stream.

9. Vibe Kayaks Skipjack 120T 12 foot Tandem angler & recreational kayak
Overview: The name Vibe goes with the eye-catching graphics with the Vibe Skipjack 120T Kayak. This awesome looking kayak is both heavier on features and price tag. Is it worth your while? Let’s find out below.
Design & Dimensions: The Skipjack has a length of 12 foot and 35″ of width. The empty weight of the kayak is 72 lbs which is a bit heavy for my liking. But then again, it makes up with the performance crafted smooth and stable roto-molded single piece polyethylene construction.
So you can stay worried free from unwanted leakage and abrasion. The kayak has a built-in buoyancy for emergency situations. The entire hull area is smudge resistant so you don’t have to face any sudden slippage.
Comfort: When I first day on this ergonomic backrests, immediately I noticed a strategic cushioning. It’s not soft yet comfortable. I looked online for any specific implementation but found nothing. I reckon it’s something to do with the pad itself. Super convenient.
The foot braces should be adjustable. I urge Vibe to include this feature. But the molded in feature doesn’t increase comfort.
Storage options: You’ll get 2 6″ sealed V-wave deck played with waterproof cargo bags. The compartment is also airtight and offers just enough space for your water sensitive equipment. You’ll also have bungee straps for your front and rear storage areas. These bungee straps come in handy when storing larger equipment onboard. Also, you’ll find 2 cup holders and a total of 6-rod holders at your disposal.
Stability & transportation: When it comes to stability, the vibe Skipjack doesn’t disappoint. It’s stable enough to stand and cast onboard. Apart from stability, it also maintains a versatile speed on the water.
Unfortunately, the transportation part is a bit tricky. It’s a two person job and the handle is molded in both at the front and back.
Our thoughts: Vibe Skipjack does making a lot of vibe in the market with their incredible modern looking kayaks. But it’s not all looks. The features are also to date. If you’re looking for your next kayaking, this one should be at your consideration. I urge beginners not to opt for this one. For you, the next kayak is more suitable.
10. Vibe Skipjack 90 angler or recreational 9-foot sit-on-top fishing kayak
Overview: Another feature packed kayak from Vibe. The Skipjack 90 series is a nifty little fun kayak, especially for young anglers. The first thing you’ll notice is the stunning graphics. And with it, sleek yet useful features. The price tag is also quite reasonable. But still, let’s dig deep before you skip, shall we?
Design & dimension: Unlike the yellowfin 120, the Skipjack 90 is more compact and versatile. The length is 9 ft with a width of 2.8 ft, this kayak is more fun to be in. Even if you decide to for ocean ventures, this one won’t let you down.
And why would it? The performance-based super stable roto-molded single piece polyethylene construction method is used. So you can stay confident and worry-free from sudden leakage.
The design also implemented buoyancy as added safety measures for emergencies. The hull is resistant to slippage and those 6 scupper holes will keep things dry on the deck for sure.
Comfort: I always like the comfort priority approach from Vibe. They have introduced built-in ergonomic backrests with soft cushion seats. And like the 120T, this cushioning is also amazing for long seating. Although not adjustable, molded-in foot braces are certainly very comfortable.
Storage & mount: Storage options are very useful in the Skipjack 90 kayak. You’ll get to use the 6″ waterproof and airtight V-WAVE deck plate with waterproof cargo bags. Here, you can keep your water sensitive equipment.
For larger gears, the bungee strapped front and rear storage areas are very useful. And as an icing on the cake, you’ll get a tackle toss tray for faster tackle swapping.
As for rod holders, there is plenty for a single angler. A total of 4 flushes mounted rod holders are available for using different kinds of rigging simultaneously.
You can also mount a fish finder or any other rectangular base accessories on the Universal mount. You’ll also have a quick access paddle rest with another two side bungee paddle parks. It’s like the Lamborghini kayak for the angler.
Stability & transportation: The Skipjack 90 is stable enough with decent speed. I would not recommend standing up on this kayak to cast or troll. Unless you have an amazing body balance of course.
And the sweet part is, unlike 120T, the Skipjack 90 is easier to transport. The empty weight is at 46 lbs with 4 molded comfort grip. It’s one anglers job, my friend.
Our thoughts: If you’re a beginner, then the Vibe Skipjack 90 is one of the best fishing kayaks for you. With amazing graphics and nifty features, it’s hard to resist such beauty.
Buying a kayak for beginners ( 11 steps )
Now let’s have some point outs for our new angler friends, shall we? Below, we’ll have some valuable tips when buying a kayak for beginners. I believe it’ll be also more or less informative for veteran kayak anglers well. These tips are aimed for tandem kayaks though.
Are you looking for a compact design or hefty feature loaded kayak? The overall length and width will influence directly on the level of comfort you’re gonna have on the water. First of all, you gotta have left space. Whether you pick a 2 seater or a single seater. Without leg room, you can’t possibly have an enjoyable fishing trip.
The size also affects the amount of equipment you can bring onboard. As an example, a 10-foot single seater kayak will have decent storage capacity. Whereas for a double seater, you’re gonna have to choose somewhere between 12-15 ft.
But nowadays, even with shorter length, manufacturers are able to provide enough storage options. And don’t forget about maneuverability. A short length kayak may have better maneuverability but it could get capsized easily. Whereas a longer kayak may have superior stability yet compromises on speed and maneuverability.
- Stability & Speed
Like I said above, stability and speed linked directly to the size of your kayak. Although some large size kayaks are now using twin pedal drive system which allows it to speed up significantly. Whatever you decide, read the feature sections thoroughly.
- Motor or paddle?
Although I haven’t included any motorized kayak there are plenty of them in the market. Some paddle kayaks offer the motor mounting option as well. But I’ll advise you to stick with paddled kayaks if fishing is your main priority.
- Construction material
When you’re looking to buy a tandem kayak, it’s imperative to go for the best material. Most of the kayak on the market are made from polyethylene or polymer. Look for high-density polyethylene kayak. Some manufacturer tunes this material for more durability and lighter weight. After deciding on a kayak, keep an eagle eye on the feature section.
I would advise not to opt for a kayak without any warranty. Especially if it’s your first tandem fishing kayak.
Inflatable kayaks are easier to transport but lack in features, durability and many other areas. Whereas traditional kayaks are more durable and feature packed. Yet tends to be a little tricky to transport. If it’s a big kayak, you can transport it easily using a kayak cart.
You could also get a kayak trailer, roof rack for storing at home. The good news is, kayaks are getting lighter at their empty weight. And they’re also coming with handles for convenient carrying.
After deciding on a kayak, make sure to carefully measure whether it will fit in your car or not.
No matter what others say, go for those kayaks with multiple storage options. Make sure that they are waterproof. And your chosen kayak should at least have one large cargo storage space for larger gears.
Your chosen kayak should house comfortable seats with enough cushioning. Also, make sure that these seats have adjustable backrests. Some kayak comes with backrests that are slightly curved at the lower end. Go for those. They are good for maintaining right back posture.
- Rod holders
I’ve seen many anglers bough kayaks without rod holders. Yes, try can be mounted separately. But why spend extra when some of the best fishing kayaks are offering multiple flush mounted and articulated rod holder?
- Multiple yet adjustable footrests
When you get a big bite, you’ll need to get some leverage off your footrests. Make sure they are stable and durable. Also, go for those adjustable footrests and braces. They are compatible with different size anglers.
- Fishfinder mount
If you’re looking to mount your fish finder, don’t forget to choose your kayak with that option.
- Sit-on-top or sit-in?
The sit-on-top kayaks allow you to be more mobile when fighting a big catch. But with the sit-in type, you won’t have that leverage. Although you’ll have more legroom and storage options. Veteran kayakers prefer the sit-on-top kayaks. How about you?
A. Absolutely. Dogs are amazing swimmers. And a trained dog can detect any upcoming danger. Even if it’s gonna rain or storm, they’ll detect it.
Is your dog trained? If not, then don’t take him on the kayak. Besides, make sure that your dog is not hydrophobic.
Another issue with an untrained dog is barking. This can be particularly grim if you’re trying to catch your next big thing.
A. The paddle comes with different shapes and sizes. So, it’s hard to recommend something specific. But in the end, your height and the length of your boat will determine the size of your paddle.
As for materials, make sure the blade and shafts are made out of either these three materials. Nylon/ Carbon, fiberglass/ fiberglass and plastic blend/ aluminum.
If you want to go for the lightest paddles, brace yourself for a higher price tag.
The shape of the shaft is also important. The classic straight shaped shaft is quicker but comes at a cost. It might give blisters on your hands. In that case, go for the bent shaft with twin kinked section that allows more ergonomic handling.
A. It’s a very common question. Especially among new kayakers. And the answer is, of course, you can. Some kayak even comes with a mounted feature. Before you install the motor, make sure to have some room for the battery as well.
You’ll also have to register your kayak after you mount it with a motor. Check your local guidelines on how to register. Besides, if fishing is your main concern, then I would recommend not to mount the motor.
For more detail information regarding fishing boat license, click here.
A. Another common question among kayakers. Listen, your kayak will stay stored most of the time. So you better arrange proper accommodation. You can buy storage equipment directly or DIY. Whatever you do, make sure to keep it out of direct sunlight.
I reckon most of us will choose to keep it in the garage. So, I recommend using a rack. Before storing, dry out the kayak thoroughly. Wrap it in polythene, and safely store for the next great adventure.
In the end
In this article, I’ve tried to put down my experience accurately. I and my team has thoroughly reviewed these kayaks and chose them out of the bunch.
Do you agree with our list? If not then feel free to fire up the comment section. We’re eagerly waiting for a constructive and informative conversation.
