Most dangerous fish to eat

I’m sure everybody knows how healthy and delicious fish is! Some people even prefer fish more than meat or any other foods. It’s true that only fish contains so many valuable nutrients which are essential for the human body!

Talking about rich in nutrition, Fish is filled with omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins such as D and B2 (riboflavin). They are enriched with calcium and phosphorus and also a great source of minerals, such as iron, zinc, iodine, magnesium, and potassium.

It’s a great source of high-protein, low-fat (fully unsaturated) food that provides a range of health benefits. White-fleshed fish, in particular, is lower in fat than any other source of animal protein, and oily fish are high in omega-3 fatty acids or the “good” fats. However, the omega-6 fatty acids are found in red meat which is considered as “bad” fats.

Enough bragging about the health benefits of fish, despite all these facts, do you know that eating fish can be dangerous too? Some fish contains mercury which is not good for health at all! Some fish contains toxic materials in their body. Even worse, such fish requires years of training to prepare ( such as fugu ), or that can be fatal for you!

So, let’s scroll down and see some of the most dangerous fish to eat! One more thing, wanna know some of the most deadly creatures of the sea? Have a look.


1. Mackerel king

Mackerel maybe one of your favorite fish to eat but you shouldn’t. At least avoid the Mackerel king which can be found in the western Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. Though they are important both for the commercial and recreational fishing industry, eating mackerel is so risky for health.

It’s an oily fish, a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids. However too much omega-3 fatty acid can cause harm. The flesh of mackerel spoils quickly, especially in the tropics, and can cause scombroid food poisoning. But that’s not the strong reason for not eating it.

Mackerel contains a high level of mercury which is not clear from but accumulated in the human body, causing various diseases.

The Atlantic mackerels are least dangerous in this regard so you can eat it as much as you want, but King mackerel? That’s a big no!

  • 5 oz or 100 grams for children

N.b: Women Who Might Become Pregnant, Women Who are Pregnant and children should avoid eating mackerel.


2. Tilapia

Would you believe me if I say you that eating tilapia could be worse than hamburger, pork bacon or doughnuts? I know it’s hard to believe, tilapia is one of the most widely consumed fish in America and around the world. But why should you avoid it from now on?

Tilapia contains very low levels of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids and, perhaps worse, very high levels of omega-6 fatty acids. What that basically means, the natural fish oil benefits found in this fish are not likely adequately boosting your omega 3s.

This low omega-3/high omega-6 ratio is a potentially dangerous food for people living with heart disease, arthritis, asthma and other allergic and autoimmune disease symptoms who are vulnerable to an exaggerated inflammatory response. This inflammation damages blood vessels, the heart, lung and joint tissues, skin and the digestive tract. (1)

Another study founds that the Tilapia have a long-chain of omega-6 fatty acids, this means 80% more than your basic hamburger, pork bacon, and doughnuts. Now you got a reason to avoid it, don’t ya?

But still, if you are fond of Tilapias, then I recommend using the best spincast reel for saltwater. The reason I’m suggesting a saltwater reel because these things are well built and can tolerate the harsh saltwater with ease. So, you will enjoy a reel with longevity.


3. Eel

Do you know that swallowing a single drop of blood of eel can kill a human? Their blood contains a toxic protein that cramps muscles, including the most vital muscle of the body, the heart. But we are talking about eating a fish raw, do we?

Heard the name “Una kyu maki”? It’s the famous sushi where freshwater eel and cucumber is used to make the food. Yup,  You can get healthy omega-3 fatty acid from it but never can avoid the bad sites of it.

Not eels have lots of fat but also it absorbs industrial and farm waste in the water. However, American species such as American eel ( Anguilla rostrata ) have the highest level of such intoxication.

A study shows that the Europian eel (Anguilla Anguilla) is also dangerous fish to eat, they contain a large amount of mercury. That’s a threat for a pregnant woman!

Despite all of these facts, we should stop eating eel to save its existence. Cause the eel is slowly leading to extinction,   advisors have recommended people to avoid sushi that has Eel in it.

4. Tilefish

Ever went for tile fishing with rods and reels in the sea on a fine sunny day? If not try it! It’s been great fun catching tilefishes. They are so beautiful and shiny looking fishes that can be found near the shoreline. But eating it so much? Well, that’s not a good plan amigo.

It’s been proved that tilefish is the leader in mercury contamination, specifically the tilefish from the Gulf of Mexico is top listed in terms of containing mercury. Containing a whopping average of 219 micrograms of mercury, it’s better to be avoided. However, the 2nd position holder in mercury-containing fish is the shark which contains 151 micrograms of mercury.

5. Chilean Sea Bass

Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) is the real name of this fish, for increasing the market value the sellers changed the name and started calling it Chilean sea bass. The strategy worked, Chilean sea bass or the Patagonian toothfish has a high demand on the market. The sad part is it’s overfished and that leads the fish to almost extinction.

Despite we have a reason not to eat it, this fish also involve in a high level of mercury carrying, mainly because of the sea critters it eats while at the bottom of the sea. Yup, it’s a deepwater predator which eats many small fishes that contains mercury.

Still, culinary adventurer and exotic diners fin this elusive species too hard to resist. And I have to say the taste is simply exquisite. So if you decide to land some of them Chilean bass, make sure to equip with the best Shimano spinning reel. These reels are built to fight big fish in the ocean.

6. Tuna

Typically a bigger sized fish contains much mercury than smaller sized fish. Tuna is a big fish, a bluefin tuna can be 2 m (6.6 ft) on average. It’s a dominating species in the food web, they eat a lot of small fish that have mercury in their body.

For that reason, mercury can be so high in tuna. Eating mercury every day can be so much harm to any human. Yah, of course, you can have some in a while, but daily? Stop it asap buddy!

Do you know that every tuna species is not that harmful? However, the bluefin tuna and blackfin tuna is high in mercury. The tuna from the farm is also not safe at all because they fed with antibiotics and hormones.

  • Poke the fish meat with your finger, not getting back? Then it’s spoilt!
  • Smells fresh, no odor!
  • The meat muscles of the fresh fish are always visible.
  • No use of preservatives


Wrap up

There are over 20000 different species of fish worldwide. Components names like bass, Atlantic salmon, halibut, haddock, etc are endangered for extinction due to overfishing. The reason I’m saying this, it’s okay to eat some exotic fish once or twice a week.

The human body has complex regenerating mechanisms. I suspect the most culprit of diseases is leading a sedentary life. This lifestyle will more likely to harm you in many ways than eating these dangerous fish here and there. So no matter what you eat, good or bad. Don’t ever forget to workout at least 45 minutes a day.
